General Information

Important general information about different varieties of fruit is listed below

Blueberries

pollination - most are self-fruitful
soil - moist acidic; mix half and half organic soil and peat moss
NOTE: orange to deep red fall colour; needs and sheltered location, mulch for winter

Cherry

pollination - self-fruitful and semi-sweet
NOTE: "Romance series" cherries are juicier and contain as much or more sugar than sweet cherries if left on the shrub longer.
Brix Ratings (1°Bx = 1 g sucrose/100 g)
8 - average
14 - good
16+ - excellent

Chokecherry

pollination - self-fruitful; yield higher if planted in pairs
soil - dry to moist (keep moist until established)

Currant

pollination - self-fruitful; yield higher if planted in pairs
soil - dry to moist (keep moist until established
BLACK CURRANTS: produce on previous year's canes*
RED & WHITE CURRANTS: produce on 2-3 year old canes*
*Cut 1/3 of old canes to ground when dormant

Gooseberry

pollination - self-fruitful; yield higher if planted in pairs
soil - dry to moist (keep moist until established
NOTE - 2-3 year old canes are productive; remove older canes

Grape

pollination - see by variety
soil - moist, excellent drainage; does well in clay soil
location - plant in south facing, protected location, mulch
pruning: fruiting on old wood, prune only in winter; hard pruning required to reliably produce fruit (bleeding desirable

Honeyberry

pollination - two different cultivars required
soil - drought tolerant; prefers wet spring soil, but well-drained for ripening
fruit - deep blue, elongated
fall colour - red

Raspberry

soil - moist, should not be allowed to dry out
Pollination - self-fruitful
Pruning - by variety
NOTE: shelter from north and west winds
SUMMER BEARING (floricane) production on previous year's canes; remove older canes
FALL BEARING (primocane) production on new growth; cut to ground after harvest

Rhubarb

plant crown tip 3-5 cm below soil surface

Saskatoon

Pollination - self-fruitful; plant another variety for higher yield
soil - well drained; drought and chinook tolerant
NOTE: tends to sucker
Fruit: deep blue-black; "the blueberry of the prairies"

Sea Buckthorn

soil - dry, alkaline
Pollination - requires male plant; wind pollination
Fruit - berries are high in vitamins C, A and E
NOTE: nitrogen fixing roots tend to sucker, very thorny
Note: fruiting branches make beautiful dry floral display

Fruit Trees

Apples

pollination - two different varieties within one city block (includes apple, crabapple and ornamental crabapple)
soil - moist

Apricots

pollination - another apricot or nanking cherry
NOTE: not reliably hardy for fruit production in southern Alberta due to cold winters; sheltered location required

Cherry

pollination - self-fruitful and semi-sweet
NOTE: "Romance series" cherries are juicier and contain as much or more sugar than sweet cherries if left on the shrub longer.
Brix Ratings (1°Bx = 1 g sucrose/100 g)
8 - average
14 - good
16+ - excellent

Pear

pollination - two different varieties within one city block
soil - moist
NOTE: large white flowers, excellent fall colour

Plum

pollination - western sandcherry, Toka plum
soil - moist
